God, in His infinite wisdom and majesty, called from among us Leonard Schardt on Tuesday, July 17, 2012. He took him to His heavenly home and granted to him the gift of eternal life won through Jesus’ death and resurrection. Leonard was born to Henry C. and Emilie (Albrecht) Schardt on June 9, 1923 in rural Carleton and baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church, Friedensau by Pastor Schabacker. He reaffirmed his baptismal covenant at his confirmation at Trinity, Friedensau May 23, 1927. Leonard graduated high school from Carleton, Nebraska in 1941. On April 15, 1951 Leonard and Alice A. Kniep were joined together in holy matrimony at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Byron, Nebraska. This union was blessed with four children: Maurice, Kathryn, Marla and Janell. Leonard and Alice made their home in rural Hebron and later in rural Carleton. He continued to live as a faithful husband, father, and devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Friedensau. In his church he was involved in the Lutheran Laymen’s League, taught Sunday School, and held many offices. Leonard was also active in his community serving on the Deshler Public School board, Thayer County Hospital Foundation, Thayer County Livestock Feeders, and Deshler Lion’s Club. He enjoyed farming and was always a “kid at heart” enjoying time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Leonard is survived by his children Maurice Schardt and wife, Jean, of Carleton; Kathryn Wiest and husband, Robert, of North Platte; Marla Musil and husband, David, of Wilber; and Janell Stengel and husband, Rick, of Carleton. Thirteen grandchildren: Carrie (Bryan) Merry, Hannah (Troy) Kane, and Lacey Schardt; Jeremy (Melissa) Wiest, Kristina (Drew) Urban, and Nathan Wiest; Jenna Musil, Megan Musil, and Kelsie Musil; Tyler (Rebecca) Stengel, Lauren Stengel and fiancé Brady Werner, Matthew Stengel, Faith Stengel. Three great grandchildren: Kian Morris, Alexis Urban, and Kalvin Wiest. Sisters: Lorine Rupprecht, Emily Siebenneicher, Valora Wurtz, Florence (Delmar) Eickmann, Frances Ritterling, Mildred (Elmer) Holtzen. Brothers-in-law and sisters-in law: Vera Schardt, Louise Loontjer, Ervin (Florence) Kniep, Olga Reinke; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Leonard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alice; his parents; brothers, Edgar Schardt, and Paul Schardt; sister Irma Ohlrich and husband Lawrence; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Reuben Rupprecht, Wayne Siebenneicher, Herman Wurtz, Lawrence Ritterling, Grace Schardt, Viola Schardt, Harold Kniep and wife Lorene, Edwin Loontjer, George Kniep and wife Anna, and Werner Reinke. God blessed Leonard with a full and rewarding life granting him 89 years, one month, and eight days on His earth. He was blessed with a loving and caring family and many wonderful friends.
