Mary Evelyn (Gardner) Cline was born to Rex and Mabel (Hammer) Gardner on December 30, 1925 in rural Concordia, Kansas. Mary was the 2nd of four children. She grew up around Concordia, Norway, and Scandia, Kansas. She passed from this life Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Blue Valley Nursing Home in Hebron, Nebraska at the age of 86 years, 3 months, 15 days. Mary was baptized into faith during the summer of 1935 by Rev. Con at the United Brethren Church in Norway, Kansas. Mary became a lifelong active member of the United Methodist Church in Hebron after her parents moved south of Hebron in 1943. She attended Concordia-Norway grade school district #87 Republic County, KS., Concordia High School through her junior year, and graduated with the class of ’43 in Hebron. Mary was united in marriage to Paul Cline on June 29, 1945 at the minister’s home in Munden, KS, the Rev. Amos Rundus. At the age of 14 years Mary and Paul each received Jesus as their Savior on separate occasions through the ministry of Rev. Rundus. Mary and Paul made their home around the Belvidere and Hebron area. They moved into Hebron on June 30, 1965. To this union seven children were born. Mary was a homemaker and housewife both of these she took very seriously. When Mary and Paul famed, Mary helped with milking the cows, planting and harvesting the crops, fixing fences and taking care of her laying hens just like she had from time she was a young girl helping her dad until she was married to Paul. Mary was the Lincoln Journal Star paper manager in Hebron for 13 years, and at some time during those years, three of Mary’s children had paper routes (Gary, Nancy, and Becky). Later in life Mary helped three of her grandchildren with a paper route to learn the honest work of a dollar. Mary was dishwasher at H & H Café, and answered the phone for Werner feed service. Mary had been the financial secretary and on the PPRC board at the United Methodist Church in Hebron. Mary took pride in her husband Paul of 62 years and their seven children. Mom (Grandma) loved us and Sundays were special, they were for family. She loved to garden and spent many a day canning food or spending time at the farmers market. She loved to make homemade cinnamon bread, which at times turned to be a money maker for the church. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband Paul on December 18, 2007; grandson Eric Rekart; and brothers-in-law Keith Jensen, Melvin Schroer, Chester Cleo Cline, and Vaughn Cline.
